Medicare can cover eligible home health services, but it does not automatically pay for every kind of help delivered at home. The useful question is not simply whether a provider accepts Medicare. Ask whether your specific service, care plan and agency meet the requirements for your coverage.
The coverage distinction that matters
Medicare’s home health benefit can include qualifying intermittent skilled nursing and therapy. Eligibility includes a clinician’s assessment and order, homebound requirements and a Medicare-certified agency. Personal care alone and round-the-clock home care are not covered under that benefit. Check the current Medicare home health coverage explanation for the complete conditions.
A practical way to prepare is to divide your request into two columns: clinical services prescribed by a clinician, and everyday help you want to arrange. Do not assume both columns will use the same provider or payment source.
Prepare for the coverage conversation
Before calling an agency, have the name of your plan, the referral contact and a short description of the proposed service. Keep insurance identifiers out of public listings and ordinary enquiry messages. Use the plan’s secure process when personal information is needed.
- Ask which services the referral actually requests.
- Ask whether the agency participates in your coverage arrangement.
- Confirm whether any authorization or additional assessment is needed.
- Ask who will explain services that are not covered.
- Request the name and contact details of the person handling coverage questions.
Separate the schedule from the benefit
A visit schedule is not a complete household support plan. Draw a simple weekly calendar and mark the times family members can realistically help. Then add the visits the agency proposes. The remaining spaces are questions to discuss, rather than evidence that an insurer will fill them.
For example, a family may want help preparing breakfast every morning as well as a clinician-directed visit. Ask for two clear answers about staffing and payment rather than treating the requests as one service.
Ask for a written explanation of costs
Request a written breakdown of the proposed visits, equipment and other charges. Medicare distinguishes covered home health services from equipment and noncovered items; Medicare Advantage members should confirm details with their own plan. Never interpret a directory listing or a telephone estimate as a final coverage decision.
Record the date of the call and the reference number if one is provided. If the explanation changes, ask which part changed and whether a revised document will follow. Keep the agency’s clinical contact separate from its billing contact.
Common questions
Does being homebound mean never leaving home?
No. Medicare describes circumstances in which permitted absences are compatible with eligibility. Ask the referring professional how the rules apply to the person’s situation; a family should not make its own eligibility determination.
Can I choose a provider from a directory?
You can use a directory to identify possibilities, then independently confirm certification, service area, availability and plan participation. A listing is an introduction, not proof of coverage.
